Healing The Inclination Toward Worry

We tend to become that to which we turn our attention. If we focus our attention on pain, then we will find pain. If we spent the day worrying, then we are actually programming the sub-conscious mind to find a way to create situations that will fulfill our worries!

– Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan

It is rightly said that worrying is praying for what we don’t want. In order to become free from worry, we must refrain from identifying with it. Adopt the perspective of the witness, noticing there are worries present, but refusing to say ”I am worried.” Do this simple practice to recover the pristine state where all healing resides.

1.     Put the attention totally on the breath, noticing its rise and fall, allowing the whole being to know itself only as the breath.

2.     Allow the in-breath to fill the heart with divine light (Nur)

3.     Feel the out-breath expand from the heart to the fullness of divine creation      (Zahir)

4.     Continue until fully absorbed in the true nature of “I am!”

Our worry about things seems to be our nature, our character; we cannot help it. It becomes such a part of our nature to worry that if we had no worry we would doubt if we were really living! Mystics, therefore, for thousands of years have practiced control of the breath,
